Tell us a little about the person behind the business? I am originally from sunny Brisbane, which is where I fell in love with my English hubbie. We moved to Melbourne for a new adventure and quickly knew it was the city for us, and now we’re now firmly rooted in the hills of the Dandenong Ranges.
Work wise, I started in the IT industry and moved into marketing, which quickly became my complete passion. I love the psychology behind great marketing and the creative side of putting together a great campaign. Writing copy is so much more fun that writing code!
And now a little about the business itself? Copywrite Matters is about creating really effective business promotion with simple but magnetic wording. It’s not just about how good your product is – you have to excite your customers with your message.
Great copywriting is engaging, exciting and persuasive. And the process pulls on all my marketing skills as I work out how a business can achieve maximum impact from the words they use. I love it!
How did you come up with your business name? I wanted something that was meaningful and set about putting related words together. After playing around with a few combinations I came across Copywrite Matters, and it just resonated with me.
I like the small play on words and hopefully it seems an obvious fit!
What made you want to begin a WAH business and how did you get started? I had been developing and executing successful marketing campaigns for a number of years, and had day dreamed about running my own business. When my husband and I starting talking about starting a family and how we would manage with a long commute into Melbourne, it was just the push I needed.
I took the plunge late one night (after a red wine or two and encouragement from my husband) and registered the business online. After taking that first step, I started applying my marketing theory and building a picture of what my business could offer. And here I am.
What motivates you to keep your business going? I am really enjoying the business development process and seeing my customer base grow.
There is a wonderful moment when a client reads their copy for the first time and it just clicks. I love the excitement they feel when they see their vision in words.
Do you have a current best-selling product or service? Website pages, online press releases and articles are particularly popular as they can help improve search engine rankings.
As with most things – quality is key. There are still people behind the screens and you have to engage with them but it’s more challenging online as you have much less time to do it in.
How do you advertise your business and which methods have proven more successful? Word of mouth advertising is really the most effective for copywriting business, so I primarily try to keep my clients happy so they refer me!
I have been sending out Tips and Hints to WAH community on facebook to promote the value of copywriting in successful business marketing. Businesses of any size can get much better results just by choosing their words carefully.
How do you juggle your family and your WAH business? Any tips for other WAHP’s? It is so easy to pop your head into the office and just do a few minutes work but it quickly begins to feel like you’re working 24*7. I really need to be able to switch off to have quality time with my family and friends and so I am quite strict about work time vs free time.
I find setting myself deadlines and schedules, and sticking to them, means that I am more efficient with the time that I have and I can really enjoy my free time.
It sounds good in theory doesn’t it?!
And finally, what advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a WAH business? Before you let you passion carry you away, take a step back and spend time finding out who else is in your market space, and how you are unique.
Map out 1) who you are, 2) what you offer and 3) your most lucrative target audience. It’s from these foundations that you build strong marketing campaigns and success.
Oh and have fun!
