Tell us a little about the person behind the business? My Name is Rhiannon Pearson. I am a stay at home mum of 2 beautiful girls (5 & 4 mths) and my husband Michael supports me in this business wherever he can. My early working years were spent in the food industry. After having my first daughter, I had trouble trying to get back into the workforce after being out of it for so long so I decided to try my hand at cake decorating and did a course to gain experience. Although I enjoyed it, I soon discovered I was not passionate about it. After having a little bit of time out to re-evaluate my options, I was offered a great opportunity at Rabbit Photo (photo lab) as a digital print trainer and quickly rose through the ranks to store manager. Through my time at Rabbit Photo, I discovered a passion for the art of photography.
And now a little about the business itself? Pearson Photography was established in March 2010 and aims to provide quality and affordable portraits capturing those special moments that our clients can treasure forever. We specialise in maternity, baby, children, adults and all special events, combining stunning portraiture and our own creative flair to create not just photos, but works of art! We are also constantly expanding our products as well as our style of photography to meet clients needs. We are willing to give anything a client suggests a go ~ You name it, we will try it!
How did you come up with your business name? I combined my name and what I do. Simple as that!
What made you want to begin a WAH business and how did you get started? I wanted to begin a WAH business to give me the flexibility that you don’t get as an employee to be with my family and earn an income. During my pregnancy with my 2nd child, I decided I wanted to start my own photography business and very quickly set about learning the ins and outs of the trade and setting up my home studio with the assistance of my husband and the vast resources of the Internet (thank you YouTube! lol).
What motivates you to keep your business going?
Money…What else motivates anyone?! That and being around my family. Running my own business gives me complete ownership of my job. It’s not something I have to do, it’s something I want to do!
Do you have a current best-selling product or service?
Being that Pearson Photography was only established in March of this year, we haven’t been running long enough to establish trends in regards to this business.
How do you advertise your business and which methods have proven more successful? At the moment, I advertise Via Facebook and rely on word of mouth. In the near future, I hope to develop a website as an additional aid as well as marketing stands in shopping centres.
How do you juggle your family and your WAH business? Any tips for other WAHPs?
With a new born, I don’t juggle, I struggle! LOL. At the moment I rely on family to provide assistance with my newborn whilst I’m conducting photo shoots. In time it will get easier as our youngest slowly develops her independence. I keep myself flexible by not booking too much work for the moment.
And finally, what advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a WAH business?
Be sure to plan everything carefully and in great detail. Do your research in every aspect of the business you want to establish. The most important point I want to make is to keep yourself motivated and be aware of when you are procrastinating, as it is very easy to do when you don’t have the controlled environment of working as an employee. Also, be aware that it will take time for your business to grow, it doesn’t happen overnight. Don’t be afraid to ask for the price that your product or service is worth. The time you invest in your business is precious and worth every penny.
