Tell us a little about the person behind the business? I am a driven, passionate, laid back lady who loves to give her all and help others out as much as I can. I am married to a serving member of the ADF and have a daughter who will soon be 2 years old.
And now a little about the business itself? THRIVE! Fitness is a Mobile Personal Training business based in Brisbane. Through various locations and name changes, the business has been operating since 2007. We moved to Brisbane last year and so too began the new and improved venture here.
I was inspired to become a personal trainer after battling through my own weight loss journey and believed that my actual understanding and passion to help people was best put to use this way. So in between a big weight loss, having a baby and a knee reconstruction, I’ve got a bit of understanding across a few areas.
How did you come up with your business name? Honestly, I was racking my brain for days trying to come up with something catchy and fresh, that fitted. I walked past a juice bar and one of the mixes available was a “thrive blend”. Queue the lightbulb moment!
I believe it embodies my beliefs and ideals of the service I provide. Its not just about losing weight or looking a certain way, its about a total lifestyle and wellbeing change, to be the best YOU can be, to THRIVE!
What made you want to begin a WAH business and how did you get started? Due to the defence lifestyle (husband coming and going alot), I found it really hard to find a job in the fitness industry that fitted around family committments and that gave me satisfaction. So out of necessity almost, I decided to go it alone and have been building, progressively, ever since.
What motivates you to keep your business going? I feel like the business is in a constant renewel faze right now with new clients and ideas coming at a steady rate. I believe there are always ways to improve the service you provide so my motivation, is to keep improving what I give to my clients, knowing that Im helping them at the same time.
Do you have a current best-selling product or service? At the moment, small group training (2-on-1, to 5-on-1) seems to be improving in leaps and bounds and the rock solid performer is the lifestyle change package, which is 3 sessions per week for 10 weeks.
How do you advertise your business and which methods have proven more successful? Until recently, my promotion was based on word of mouth. I am slowly building and now the website is live, I will do a targeted flyer promotion and of course Support a WAHP.
How do you juggle your family and your WAH business? Any tips for other WAHP’s? Very carefully. I’ve very deliberately built my clientele slowly and only in the timeslots where I knew everything was covered. I also study as well, so its been an obvious step for my daughter to spend more time at day care as my work and study time has grown.
Best advice, dont take on too much too soon an know your limitations. Better to start slowly and gradually progress than have a huge boom early and everything burn out.
And finally, what advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a WAH business? Find the thing that makes you happy to get up to it every day. If you dont love what you do, you will find it tough to grow and succeed over time. Do your research and honestly evaluate your strengths and weaknesses and work on making everything stronger. Take “constructive” critcism well, always ask for feedback and use it to make the best business you can.
