Our February, 2012 Business of the Month is Bosco Bear. Read our interview with Sue Cook below.

Tell us a little about the person behind the business: I have three children, twins that are 4 (turning 5) and a two-and-a-half year old. I live in Melbourne but started my business in Sydney. I am a bit of a workaholic and outside of work, cannot get enough sport into my life (netball, cricket, AFL, cycling, tennis–I will watch it all). I love running, although do not do it as much as I would like to and I play netball/tennis. I also enjoy studying search engine optimisation (SEO) in my spare time…which is a little weird because I have no spare time. Why SEO? I cannot answer.

And now a little about the business itself?

We have been in business since early 2006 and during that time, have had a lot of fun helping to personalise the imagination of children’s bedrooms and play areas everywhere.

We have also helped mums and dads too. We have added to the organisation birthday parties with our party products and personalised party invitations (new range launching in 2011) all over Australia. We have helped make sure that things don’t get lost with our range of labels for school, day care and kindergarten! Whatever the design, what ever the colour we have some cute (and crazy) label creations. We have even helped keep track of time – measuring children as they grow with our height chart designs and teaching the time with our wall decal clock range.

From dinosaurs to butterflies, jungle characters to owls and enchanting trees, pirates to princesses our BoscoBear range is jam packed full of bright, colourful characters and stories that are sure to please. There are over 2000 designs in our range and we are adding to this all the time for new products, new creative and new collections!

How did you come up with your business name?

We had a black cat named Boss in the units we were living in Sydney (when the twins were born, Boss left us for the guys two doors up – they now own Boss). My husband and I started calling the cat Bosco, then he soon became Bosco Bear! When we decided to start selling our wall sticker, room decor and school essential designs we needed a name. The cat ran past and knocked my coffee over during the brain storm and the rest is history!

What made you want to begin a WAH business and how did you get started?

Not really sure. I sort of fell into it and then became addicted and went from there.

What inspires you to keep your business going?

My children, my husband, my girl friends and my mum! Plus I am someone who has to work, create and be in business. I think it is part of my DNA…Staying motivated is easy. It is juggling the role of mother, wife, daughter, girlfriend and inner-self that is a little harder (especially when you are waiting for school to start LOL!)

Do you have a current best-selling product or service? If yes, tell us about it.

http://www.boscobear.com.au/kids-name-labels.html . Our name labels, library bags & swim bags are very popular at the moment. Lots of designs to choose from at very affordable prices. They are all personalised products and are designed and made in Australia.

How do you advertise your business and which methods have proven more successful?

For online retailing businesses, good SEO advice is so important and so hard to find. The more you can learn about your online business and the markets you sell to, the better lasting success you will have. A great place to start is the SEOMoz.org - beginners guide to SEO it is a good clear read with not too much jargon.

How do you juggle your family and your WAH business? Any tips for other WAHPs?

Communicate and priortise and of course have a great online diary – that is backed up (learnt the hard way on this one)

And finally, what advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a WAH business?

Never be afraid of the ‘next thing/problem’ or failure. 9/10 when you break it down the next thing comes in bite size chunks. And as long as you fail fast, that too becomes a distant memory very quickly as it is replaced by success.

Tell us a little about the person behind the business?
My name is Amanda, I am a 29 year old living and working on the Gold Coast. I live with my partner Steven our naughty little 2 year old Cattle Dog Sophie and our beautiful Cat Summer. I fell in love with Graphic Art in 1999 when I produced custom website graphics for clients while finishing High School but my Tertiary Education took me away from my web design and artwork in 2000.

I graduated from Griffith University in 2002 with a Bachelor of International Business majoring in domestic and international Marketing. A few years after graduating I found myself still in love with the world of Graphic Art and went back to complete training at the Queensland College of Graphic Art in Burleigh Heads. I have 12 years marketing experience for both large firms and boutique businesses and 6 years commercial print art experience – but a love affair with it that extends well back into my past. I work full time as a Marketing Manager and also run E nslaved Design – which makes for some long days and working weeks. But I love what I do and wouldn’t change my career for anything!

And now a little about the business itself?
Enslaved Design is a Graphic Art and Marketing business based on Queensland’s Gold Coast. We specialise in making our clients stand out against their competitors. We have a pretty broad list of services including: developing marketing plans, promotions, web art, print art, business stationary, flyers, posters, branding and apparel. During my induction into Marketing I was focused on branding – I have never lost my passion for building and maintaining powerful brands that send simple messages. We love nothing more than a challenge – thinking outside the square to increase clients’ visibility, likeability and sales.

How did you come up with your business name? Back in the 90’s… I was a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan (stop laughing)… and was a little bit in love with one of the characters, Spike. So, my internet name was “Spike’s Slave” at the end of the show, it got changed to just “Slave”. I used to produce a lot of fan art and early web art under that name “Slave”. The name Enslaved Design was born from my old internet name and its pretty appropriate – we do aim to bewitch prospective customers with out artwork and approach to branding.

What made you want to begin a WAH business and how did you get started?

I started Enslaved Design in 2009 after identifying a need for more, hybrid Marketer and Graphic a\Artist contractors in the market. The two fields are heavily interconnected and I have found over my years working as a Marketing Manager that Graphic Art with a touch of marketing keeps branding strong and artwork more targeted and relevant to campaigns and goals. Although one of the main drivers – that isn’t the only reason. I have always had a very quirk and sometimes “in your face” style of art and advertising – I wanted to share my personality and design style with more people than just my full time employer. I have always thought design should convey a message and make a business or brand stand out – and that’s what I attempt to do for every client in every piece of art. Hence our tagline – Different by Design.

What inspires you to keep your business going?
What motivates me to continue Enslaved Design? Meeting amazing people who become my clients and friends as well as experiencing many different business types (Plasterers, Yoga Schools, Beauty Salons, Engineers etc etc). I get to do something different, for a different business each day. It’s exciting and engaging – I couldn’t picture myself doing anything else.

Do you have a current best-selling product or service? If yes, tell us about it.

Thanks largely to my experience managing some big brands in the building industry – I would have to say I am known for my branding packages and logo creation – its also probably my favourite job – although I love it all.

How do you advertise your business and which methods have proven more successful?

Word of mouth has always been the key to generating new business for Enslaved Design. I have also had success through advertising on Facebook and generating leads through my website.

How do you juggle your family and your WAH business? Any tips for other WAHPs?

That is the question for me! I work full time as a Marketing Manager and I have Enslaved Design on the side – which means my weeks look pretty ugly a lot of the time. I can spend up to 85 hours working, leaving little time for anything else. I am very lucky to have a fantastic and understanding partner who helps me more than words can say. I find that I don’t spend enough time doing important things like exercising and much of the time my social life suffers. One of my big goals in 2012 is to balance all of my lives a little better and have some time for “me” at the end of each week.

Do you offer any discounts to Support a WAHP members?

We recently relocated our family from Sydney to Northern NSW. I’m originally from the US but have called Australia home for seven years now.

And now a little about the business itself? I specialise in fun, on-location, natural-light photography, mostly for families, children and babies but I also do events, weddings, commercial photography and some design and editorial work.

How did you come up with your business name? I wanted a playful, memorable name (no one can pronounce my surname correctly!) and liked the idea of combining ‘Shutterbug’, a common term for photographers in America, with the Australian slang of ‘bub’ for baby. Although sometimes I think my business name limits me a bit as some people think I only photograph babies.

What made you want to begin a WAH business and how did you get started? I did my uni degree in photography (back in the film days!) but moved into publishing once I entered the career world. When I was on maternity leave after having my first daughter, I finally had the time and inspiration to get back behind the camera, plus plenty of willing models to use with other babies from my mother’s group. I built up my portfolio over time and finally launched the business. I still do some freelance publishing work as well, which is more what pays the bills while the photography is more for the passion of it.

What motivates you to keep your business going? Not wanting to go back to a full-time office job! I’m also a person that needs to feed my creative side and have something else to occupy my mind besides just kids’ stuff all the time, so it really is the best of both worlds, as hard as it can be at times.

Do you have a current best-selling product or service? Probably my most popular package is the DigiBub package, which offers an on-location shoot plus digital files in lieu of prints. Not many established photographers do this as they want to maintain creative control (sometimes I struggle with it myself), but in this ever-changing world of technology and families spread across the globe, I think it’s lovely to be able to share the images without prints. My family is still in the US so for them, nice photos of their grandkids is all they want!

How do you advertise your business and which methods have proven more successful? I’ve tried advertising on Facebook, having market stalls, and have investigated print advertising, but I find the most loyal, quality customers come via word of mouth – they are already familiar with my style and have chosen me because of that and not some super cheap special. I also had a strong relationship with the Royal North Shore Hospital’s Newborn Care Centre in Sydney, offering free in-hospital sessions to families passing through there (we spent many weeks there ourselves), and I got to meet many great families that way and watch their gorgeous little bubs grow up! I would love to do something similar now that I’ve moved.

How do you juggle your family and your WAH business? Any tips for other WAHP’s? If anyone has any tips, I need them! I try to work around my family schedule as much as possible, to limit day care time for the girls while trying to squeeze in snippets of work wherever possible. But the nature of the business means sometimes I’m manically busy, while other times completely quiet, so I just have to take things as they come and hope for the best. Although I do admit I have my ‘bad mummy’ moments of plopping the kids in front of a DVD for a while so I can get some work done in peace!

And finally, what advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a WAH business? It’s not as easy as it seems! Work is always staring you in the face and so is the housework, so it’s hard to find that balance – I still struggle with this! In 2012 I will be looking at getting more help on the business side of things so I can concentrate on what I love and what I’m good at, and still make sure I’m getting quality time with my family. One thing I’ve learned lately is you can’t be everything to everyone and still do your best – there is only so much energy to go around!

Do you offer any discounts to Support a WAHP fans? Of course! All Support a WAHP fans can get 25% off all Shutterbubs sessions, packages and prints.

And now a little about the business itself? Cheese & Pickles is an online store specialising in quirky, unique & boutique fashion & accessories for babies & kids. We stock mainly Australian boutique brands, and cater to the mums and shoppers looking for something a bit different to your run of the mill stuff that you find in places like Kmart & Target!

How did you come up with your business name? I had decided i was going to start the website and wanted a name that was different to the rest! I brainstormed with my mum on the phone and we came up with all sorts of silly options – Cheese & Pickles was the one that stuck! Since i began the business i have had tons of compliments on the name – which just reassures me i made the right decision. Its definitely a name that people remember.

What made you want to begin a WAH business and how did you get started? Back in 2009 i started my first WAH business – Angelic Scents & Beauty. I wanted to stay at home with my children (like most WAHM’s!) and loved being able to answer emails in my PJ’s!. I then decided to start Cheese & Pickles in July this year – by the end of August the store was up & running. I sold Angelic Scents & Beauty back in September so that i could devote my time to my new venture!

What motivates you to keep your business going? I want to get bigger & better! It would be fantastic to become a ‘well known’ site, that people come to first when looking to buy gifts etc for their kids.

Do you have a current best-selling product or service? Our range of Cuskis sell really well (natural baby comforters), and the boutique brand clothing has also been selling well. A very popular boys item are the Fedora Hats! They are super cute & spunky!

How do you advertise your business and which methods have proven more successful? I have banner ads on various websites (Support a WAHP, KID Independent, etc). Plus, I offer discounts and run promotions occasionally through sites like Mum’s Lounge & Babyology.

How do you juggle your family and your WAH business? Any tips for other WAHP’s? Somedays it can be really hard – other days it seems easy! Jaxon is now at Kindy which frees up some time, plus i put Mia into childcare 1 and a half days a week (whilst Jaxon is at Kindy) which gives me time to really concentrate (and relax!!)

And finally, what advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a WAH business? Go for it! Its so much fun, but also a great challenge!

Tell us a little about the person behind the business? My name is Bron and I have always been interested in crafts. When I was 16 my dad bought me a small kiln and I started experimenting with enameling. I later moved onto ceramics and have progressively tried many aspects of crafting over time. To keep me entertained while I was developing various crafting skills, I enjoyed a successful career in teaching, accounting and small business management. Now I work from home and the ratio of handcrafting far exceeds the allure of balance sheets. My ideas facilitator takes the form of a four legged companion who has no idea he is really a Jack Russell Terrier but he has very good instincts!

And now a little about the business itself? BronzBeadz started after selling some pieces to friends I worked with. I gradually built a website, facebook page & now also have a store on Oz Handmade. The business has grown to include glass art which is proving very popular. I try to maintain “one-off” products, to ensure each person has their own unique piece, also allowing me to be creative, move on & keep BronzBeadz evolving. The business has diversified from jewellery to glass beadmaking, glass art, stained glass & copper foil. Incorporating pieces for the house which can be used as functional, wall displays, bowls etc.

How did you come up with your business name? Over the years, my name, Bronwyn, has been shortened to Bron by my family & friends. BronzBeadz just seemed to fit & it appears I am now easily remembered as Bron from BronzBeadz.

What made you want to begin a WAH business and how did you get started? Being a defence wife with lots of moves around the country, it seemed to make sense to try and operate a home business selling my pieces instead of continually seeking employment with a 2 year interstate move. The support of my friends & family encouraged me to give a business a go. It has been a slow, but very rewarding process.

What motivates you to keep your business going? Along with my love of creating new pieces of jewellery & glass….definitely customer satisfaction. I find it so rewarding to hear from clients how thrilled they are when they receive their purchase. My husband is 100% dedicated to my business, supporting me as my photographer & suggestions to design. I would never have thought others would pay money for something I have made. I have to be happy with that.

Do you have a current best-selling product or service? With jewellery, I would probably have to say my glass dichroic pieces are the most popular due to their individuality & brilliant colours. With my glass pieces, I would say the glass clocks.

How do you advertise your business and which methods have proven more successful? My best form of advertising is word of mouth, recommendations, networking & supporting others.

How do you juggle your family and your WAH business? Any tips for other WAHP’s? Originally from Sydney, most of family live in the Eastern states. I try & spend the day on my business & the night on the phone catching up with everyone.

And finally, what advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a WAH business? Give it a go. It is definitely challenging & can be slow going at times, but the rewards at the end are well & truly worth it. Lovely to be your own boss & meet great people along the way.

Do you offer any discounts to Support a WAHP fans? I offer 10% discount to Support a WAHP fans (not in conjunction with other offers/sales). People just need to let me know they are a fan.

Other comments: Thank you to those that voted for BronzBeadz & especially to Cas & Erica from Support a WAHP for the opportunity of showcasing my business.

I live in a beautiful part of East Gippsland and love my garden too!

And now a little about the business itself? Old Mother Hubbard came about because my 5 year old grandson wanted an apron to help his mum cook, and didn’t want a “girly” one! My grandsons all have ragdoll pirates that l have hand made for them, and in doing so, was asked to make them for other children.

How did you come up with your business name? Thats easy… the name came about for three reasons….

1. l am old!
2. l am a Mother and Nana!
3. My sewing “room” is a cupboard!!!

What made you want to begin a WAH business and how did you get started? I never considered my stuff good enough to sell, but my daughter put up a few pictures on facebook and orders started rolling in. It still amazes me!

What motivates you to keep your business going? I love to create new dolls, each one takes on a personality as they evolve .
l love to encourage children to get in the kitchen and be creative, but l prefer to use good ,old fashioned recipes, using basic ingredients found in most pantries, rather than sending Mums to the shops for a teaspoon of something that then sits in the cupboard and grows hairs!

Do you have a current best-selling product or service? Probably my best selling product is the Mini Master Chef Kits. Because they come with the apron, recipe book and wooden spoon, they make a great gift.

How do you advertise your business and which methods have proven more successful? l do not advertise, except through word of mouth and my business cards, but l do have a stall at local markets and have found them a great source, providing repeat customers.

How do you juggle your family and your WAH business? Any tips for other WAHP’s? Having a hubby who can cook, clean and do the washing really helps! He is a huge help!

And finally, what advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a WAH business? Just do it, what have you to lose… and you meet some lovely people along the way!

Do you offer any discounts to Support a WAHP fans? l offer a 10% discount to all Support a WAHP fans.

Tell us a little about the person behind the business? I’m a mum of 2 young daughters, have worked in the disability industry for almost 10 years until i had my first daughter. I then worked at home as a family daycarer until my second, where time with my children became precious!

And now a little about the business itself? Being on essentially one wage, money is a buit tighter. I wanted to bring in a quality brand that I love to use myself, that i could sell at a reasonable price to others. As it’s still in the early stages, i’m still experimenting with some products, but that’s part of the fun!

How did you come up with your business name? It’s a combination of my two daughter’s names – Jordyn and Ashlee, and the Baby is so it’s directed to the correct target market

What made you want to begin a WAH business and how did you get started? My husband and I were reluctant to have me return to doing child care at home, but I needed to have something else to keep my brain active. A girlfriend had started her own business, gave me places to start, and i began by doing markets (which i still do), before starting online. I also utilise ebay to ensure my pricing is competative.

What motivates you to keep your business going? I’m just really enjoying meeting new people at markets, and being able to pass quality products to the general population. And being able to stay at home with my girls is a fantastic perk!

Do you have a current best-selling product or service? Without a doubt, my babygap brand pyjamas sell really well – there are just so many cute designs that I find it hard to decide which ones to sell!

How do you advertise your business and which methods have proven more successful? I use facebook a lot to promote my page. I also have a lot of family and friends spruiking the business!

How do you juggle your family and your WAH business? Any tips for other WAHP’s? The idea behind working from home is to not have to give up quality time with my children and husband. However, doing markets gives me much needed time to myself to meet new people, while any online stuff can be done during nap times!

And finally, what advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a WAH business? Give it a go! I didn’t have to invest very much to start up, so if it didn’t work, then i wasn’t going to be behind.

Do you offer any discounts to Support a WAHP fans? I will offer a 5% discount to anyone who mentions seeing me on your page!

Tell us a little about the person behind the business? My name is Amanda Foy and I am a delightfully happy 40 year old with two primary school age children, a husband and career IP of over 22 years working in large domestic and international corporate businesses. I am also a Reiki practitioner, volunteer for the local soccer club, mentor and awesome friend!

And now a little about the business itself? Foyster’s Communications was hatched in 2009 when the GFC hit and Amanda was made redundant from a global beef firm. Initially the business was set up as an outsourcing solution for businesses who were in the spot of having to reduce staff, but still needed the assistance. It has since morphed into a business supporting other businesses with the communication strategies, branding and modern marketing solutions with social media. Amanda also holds workshops to help businesses get a better understanding of social media and motivational topics which play a big part in successful business.

How did you come up with your business name? I’ve always wanted my own business and when I stopped work to have my first child I bought the domain name “foysters” just because I needed email from home and didn’t want to just have a hotmail one. Foyster is my nickname, so I figured I would market me as I was the business.

What made you want to begin a WAH business and how did you get started? I have always wanted to be on a small business program saying “I started with $1000″, so home was the only option for me and we had an office space. It allowed me to have quality time with my kids in the morning and reduced need for other help in looking after them in the afternoon.

What motivates you to keep your business going? The results achieved with the people I work with. The fact that the fresh set of eyes I provide businesses helps to motivate them to keep going or take a different track. I’ve started to include my Reiki in the services with clients too. So many times I see business people, mainly women, suffering with self defeating thought processes, so I’ve got a big job to help keep those things at bay and get the focus back on the success of the businesses.

Do you have a current best-selling product or service? My best selling service at the moment is my Branding DNA Analysis and business development report for new or established businesses looking for a pep-up.

How do you advertise your business and which methods have proven more successful? Networking, facebook and my blog.

How do you juggle your family and your WAH business? Any tips for other WAHP’s? Routine Routine Routine. At the start I wanted to be there for everything and everyone because I was so passionate about what I was offering. I was working hideous hours. I had to make the call that I was no good to anyone exhausted so I reigned it in. I also give realistic deadlines for work. Discipline is the biggest aspect and not going into fear if you don’t work 17 hours a day to keep everyone happy. Open, honest communication with your family, your clients and your friends will keep everything on the right track.

And finally, what advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a WAH business? Take the step. You will never look back. My only majorly HUGE piece of advice is – do the planning. Write your business plan, do your costings, understand what you are worth through research and knowing how much you need to earn to contribute to your family as you were when you were employed. If you do everything properly at the start, you will not be wasting time putting out little fires or redoing things later when you could be getting stuck into your core business.

KNOW YOUR WORTH!!! The end.

Do you offer any discounts to Support a WAHP fans? If any Support a WAHP fan would like to take advantage of a Remote Reiki (I do them for anyone anywhere in the world) I have a special rate of $60 – they are usually $80.

Other comments: Thank you for asking great questions!
