I don’t know about you, but one of the first items on my list of reasons why I should start my own business was “freedom.”…After two and a half years in business I had it pointed out to me today working with a valued friend in the United States that I had just put myself back in jail. Albeit slowly, but none-the-less …jail.
You chose to work from home so you could spend more time with your family, right? How’s that working out for you? Do you sometimes feel like you have a love affair with your computer instead? When you work from home the boundaries between work time and family time are less clear cut, so if you want to honour the reasons you started a work at home business in the first place, you need to be self-disciplined. Here are 5 quick tips that might help:
Yesterday, I ducked down to the grocery store while I had the chance to go without the kids in tow. I ran into another mum I know and shared my joy at being able to experience such a rare event (going shopping alone that is) . She said “What does that say about us when we find shopping at the grocery store a welcome break for the kids?” I laughed, but inside I felt like the joke was on me.
Yesterday I read a fantastic blog post that hit a rather raw nerve in my entrepreneurial brain. The blog post by marketing mentor Sue Painter (read it here on Solo-E.com) called me on my deep-seeded fears and apprehensions about growing my businesses.
Do you find it hard to pull yourself away from the computer when you work at home? I’m looking at the clock right now and it is lunchtime! I feel like I’ve been in a time warp. Where did half the day go?
What’s your social strategy? Do you have one? If you don’t you could be missing out on business. A lot of startup and small home based businesses make the mistake of focusing on tactics like advertising and promotions over developing a marketing strategy that marries their social media marketing with their offline marketing. Businesses put themselves out there and then wonder why nobody knows about them. It would be a tragedy if you gave up, simply because you didn’t know how to optimise social media for your business.
Do you need to rebrand your fledgling business? If you do, I have a hot tip for you today…Facebook now allows you to merge duplicate pages together. You get to keep the contacts you’ve worked hard to engage but the downside is that you’ll lose the posts. This is a great option for anyone who needs to rename their business for whatever reason.
2011 really has been about jumping in the deep end for me. How about you? I wonder what 2012 will hold for us all. On one of my Facebook groups we’ve been discussing our “words” to set the tone for our vision of next year. My word is “abundance.” A few years back, during the global financial collapse, we were in a very bad way financially.
