Why did you become self employed in the first place?

freedombannersq

I don’t know about you, but one of the first items on my list of reasons why I should start my own business was “freedom.”…After two and a half years in business I had it pointed out to me today working with a valued friend in the United States that I had just put myself back in jail. Albeit slowly, but none-the-less …jail.

What’s your biggest challenge as a work at home person?

Tuesday's daily dose blog post for work at home parents and people

You chose to work from home so you could spend more time with your family, right? How’s that working out for you? Do you sometimes feel like you have a love affair with your computer instead? When you work from home the boundaries between work time and family time are less clear cut, so if you want to honour the reasons you started a work at home business in the first place, you need to be self-disciplined. Here are 5 quick tips that might help:

If grocery shopping is your idea of a holiday, it’s time to review your priorities!

is grocery shopping at Christmas a holiday?

Yesterday, I ducked down to the grocery store while I had the chance to go without the kids in tow. I ran into another mum I know and shared my joy at being able to experience such a rare event (going shopping alone that is) . Take a breath, you don’t have to do everything today!

What’s your vision for 2012?

thursdays sponsor picks on Support a WAHP

2011 really has been about jumping in the deep end for me. How about you? I wonder what 2012 will hold for us all. On one of my Facebook groups we’ve been discussing our “words” to set the tone for our vision of next year. My word is “abundance.” A few years back, during the global financial collapse, we were in a very bad way financially.

I sat down at the computer this morning, determined to plough through my to do list, only to get sucked into the social media vortex! It’s easily done. So, here I am at 9am doing yesterday’s task of writing a blog post and pondering the busy-ness that is, at times, overwhelming. Being busy and being productive are two different things. How do you ensure you have a productive day so that you can take time out for the important things… taking kids to the park, enjoying a cup of tea on the back deck while listening the rain, catching up with the people you care about.

“Has anyone seen my iphone?” I cry out to the zombies transfixed on the TV. Meanwhile I frantically throw pillows, clothes and last week’s mail around looking for my phone. I finally give up and look for my other phone to call my iphone for the 10th time that morning….

“Mum, you work too much!” The words no work-at-home mum wants to hear!

fun at the Brisbane Winter Festival

“Mum, you work too much!” Those words weren’t exactly what I wanted to hear from my 11-year-old but he was not the only one frustrated by my work load…So when my son blurted out those words, as painful as they were to hear, I knew I had to do something. It was a stark reminder to take breaks, and turn myself off from my work world to be present to my family’s needs. Does anybody else find that difficult?
